Concept of Online Communities
By xaby | June 6, 2007
I got started into the Web Industry when I started an online community for Singaporeans during my Junior College days and those days, domain names cost you around USD$70 per year, web hosting costs SGD$20/month (which is miserable as you get only 20mb of web space!) compared to the competitive prices you get nowadays.
Within 6 months, I got 1000,000 page views!
And gosh I was ecstatic then and that was how I got into this industry.
And if you are really interested in online communities, I believe there are 2 books you must read! (Applicable even in today’s world).
Net Gain and Net Worth by John Hagel III
Good news if you don’t want to buy them, you can borrow them from the National Library (I got my copies there)
And just a quick note on online communities (or virtual communities):
“A virtual community or online community is a group of people that primarily or initially communicate or interact via the Internet, rather than face to face. Online communities have also become a supplemental form of communication between people who know each other in real life. A “Computer-mediated community” (CMC) uses social software to regulate the activities of participants. An online community such as one responsible for collaboratively producing open source software is sometimes called a development community. Significant socio-technical change has resulted from the proliferation of Internet-based social networks.[1]” From Wikipedia
